From dirk.behrend-1 at nasa.gov Thu Feb 8 12:09:37 2018 From: dirk.behrend-1 at nasa.gov (Behrend, Dirk (GSFC-61A.0)[NVI INC]) Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2018 20:09:37 +0000 Subject: [IGSMAIL-7576] REMINDER: GM2018 registration and abstract submission deadline is February 25 Message-ID: Dear colleagues, The tenth IVS General Meeting will be held in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Norway in early June 2018. As part of this event in the high Arctic, the local host of the Norwegian Mapping Authority (NMA) will officially inaugurate the new twin radio telescopes at Ny-Alesund. The inauguration event will be organized as a day trip via boat from the town of Longyearbyen to Ny-Alesund. The opening of the Earth Observatory at Ny- Alesund is the first step of establishing this high Artic location as a core site for global geodesy as envisioned by the UN-GGIM with co-located VLBI, SLR, GNSS, DORIS, and gravimetric instruments. NMA has prepared a video about what to expect at this high latitude location: http://video.kartverket.no/the-10th-ivs-general-meeting Further details are listed in the Second Announcement (see below) and are available on the meeting Web site. Please note that the deadlines for abstract submission and registration are approaching fast, i.e., the last day for registration and abstract submission for this event is February 25, 2018. If you intend to be part of this event, please register by this date. All IVS Associate Members and individuals who have interests in the application of VLBI in the fields of geodesy, Earth sciences, and astrometry are invited to attend the meeting. The keynote of the tenth GM is the contribution of the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) to the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) in its endeavor to render sustainable development possible under the theme "Global Geodesy and the Role of VGOS - Fundamental to Sustainable Development." The United Nations recognized the importance of geospatial information to address global challenges with creating a UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy and following through with a roadmap to implement a Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF). The space-geodetic techniques of VLBI, GPS, SLR, and DORIS will be fundamental for an accurate, accessible and sustainable GGRF to support science and society. The meeting host is Kartverket (the Norwegian Mapping Authority, NMA). Details about the meeting including the program, accommodations, registration, and abstract submission is available at the meeting Web site: http://www.ivs2018.no/ Poster and oral papers may be contributed for presentation at the General Meeting.
