From carter4451 at bellsouth.net Fri Sep 17 19:31:46 2010 From: carter4451 at bellsouth.net (bill carter) Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2010 22:31:46 -0400 Subject: [IGSMAIL-6263] Re: Remembering Harry Peters In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <99922FE5DF5F4DBB861DE7C66AD3844F@Carter> Hi All, Harry Peters built MASER frequency standards under contract to NOAA/NGS for the VLBI stations that we equipped with Mark III VLBI terminals for project POLARIS - Fortaleza, Hobart, Hartebeesthock. I don't know if they are still in use. I know that I found Harry easy to work with and he was dedicated to delivering the best produce that he could, at the lowest cost. At the time, Harry and Bob Vessot disagreed about the best design for the MASER oscillator cavity - Bob built his out of Cer-Vit to minimize temperature effects and make the most stable oscillator that he could. Harry made his of Aluminum, and had a feed back loop to compensate for dimensional changes. We bought a Vessot MASER for Westford, and it performed well, but it was considerably more costly than we could purchase from Harry Peters, so we purchased three from him, and they also performed well. I'm sorry to hear the he has passed away - seems like every day I hear about the death of another old colleague. Thanks, Tom Clark, for passing on the information and for the nice summary of Harry Peters life and contributions to science.
